After a string of unsuccessful on and off-field incidents, the Western Bulldogs has now been able to garner secure sponsorship from a number of sponsors. In an attempt to revive the team's declining spirit, the Whitten Oval has also been subjected to major revivals and re-construction. With new influx of finance into the Western Bulldogs club, the team had shown considerable improvement in the league games of 2006 and 2007 but unfortunately the premiership title again evaded the team. The team is looking forward to sealing a victory in their future seasons in the Australian Football League. The western bulldogs or Footscray as the team was known in its initial years was a member of the Victorian Football Association and joined the VFL as late as 1925. As a VFA member the club had won as many as 9 premiership titles, a status which it could not manage to maintain as a VFL member.
However, Footscray showed promise very early in its role as a VFL member and showed immense potential for becoming finalists in 1928 but ultimately failed to do so. Western Bulldogs could seal big win a league game only in 1953 when they won the semi-final against Essendon. It was only in 1954 that Western bulldogs could bring back home the premiership trophy when they won the final against Melbourne. The club owed their only premiership title to coach and Captain Charlie Sutton and talented football player, Ted Whitten. In the years following the title, Footscray failed to make any mark but they reached the grand final of 1961. But it was in the 90's, under strict administration of David Smorgon ad Terry Wallace and the captaincy of Chris Grant, that the team could show some real improvement in its game. The 90s were also the period when Smorgon took the initiative of changing the club's name to Western Bulldogs. The period also witnessed the sad demise of football legend and great Western player E.J. Whitten. The E.J. Whitten stand at the Whitten Oval has been erected in memory of the great player who lost his li8fe to cancer.
Today under the guidance of Rodney Eade and the captaincy of Brad Johnson, the Western Bulldogs are fighting to bring back that winning streak into the team so that it can seal a premiership title in the next league game.
