Melbourne Demon or The Demons is the nickname of Melbourne Football Club which is a member of the Australian Football League. The club is based in Victoria, Melbourne. The Melbourne Demon club is the oldest football club of Australia and will celebrate its 150th year in 2008. The Melbourne Demon club plays its maximum matches on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Melbourne Football Club was a part of the Melbourne Cricket Club. The official club song is �It�s a Grand Old Flag� and the official uniform is the red and blue striped jersey coupled with blue shorts.

The birth of the Melbourne Demon club dates back to the era when the Australian football had started, i.e. in the year 1858. In the year 1859, the rules of the Melbourne Football Club were laid down with significant contributions from Tom Wills and HCA Harrison. During the 1960�s the Melbourne Demon club earned the repute as the �Invincible Whites�. In 1879, Melbourne Demons played their first match against Carlton. In the year 1889, the Melbourne Demon team was faced with dire financial crisis and was a made a part of the Melbourne Cricket Club. After this merger, the team regained its lost glory and was one of the most powerful teams in the following few seasons. It finished 4th in the years 1892 to 1896. In 1896, Melbourne Demons played a major part in the setting up of the Victorian Football League. In 1900, the Melbourne Demons won its first VFL flag after defeating the Fitzroy. In 1904, the club played its first match against Essendon and won it. Thereafter, the team could not give much of their leading performances and won their second VFL flag in 1926. However, the Melbourne Demons could not cash on this victory and continued to slip down the ranking ladder.

Between 1929 and 1935, the team could not even qualify for the finals even once and although in 1936 it reached the finals it was defeated by Carlton. In 1939 Melbourne Demons won their first minor Premiership and the fame continued even in the 1940�s. In 1941, it became one of the very few clubs to have won the VFL flag in succession. Thereafter the victorious journey continued through the following years and in 1936 Melbourne Demons won 13 games in superb fashion. They played the next Grand Final in 2000 after 1988 but lost the match to Essendon. In 2003, the club slipped down to 13th rank but again regained its position in the top five in 2004. In 2006, the Melbourne Demon team put up a commendable performance and has maintained to do so in the current season of 2007.

The Melbourne Demons have won the Premiership matches of 1900, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964. The Brownlow Medal has been won by Don Cordner, Peter Moore, Brian Wilson, Shane Woewodin and Jim Stynes among others. The Coleman Medal has been won by David Neitz and Leigh Matthews Trophy has been won by Jim Stynes. Other renowned members have also won many awards and the Melbourne Hall of Fame was determined in the year 2000 comprising of great Australian players.

The present coach of the Melbourne Demon club is Mark Riley and captain is David Neitz. Currently, the Melbourne Demon club occupies the 14th position in the ranking ladder.
