The history of Fremantle club dates back to the 19th century when the premiership match was organised in the year 1885 by Victorians, Rovers, Fremantle and Perth High School. After a couple of matches, Perth High School withdrew and a second premiership match was arranged. Fremantle club won all the seven matches in this competition and then withdrew in the year 1886. In 1890 they adopted the name of Fremantle Football Club. The Fremantle team won flags in 1888 and 1889 and again consecutively from 1892 to 1896 and also in 1898. Then in 1898, a new club, East Fremantle emerged on the scenario and in 1900, South Fremantle participated in the competition. In 1901, another new team North Fremantle became a part of the competition and this team lasted for only 15 seasons in the competition. East and South Fremantle have remained arch rivals for a very long period of time. In the year 1993, the AFL team announced that a new team would enter the League which was to be based completely in Fremantle and this became the Fremantle Football Club. The official club colours were announced in 1994 and they started their training sessions the same year. In the Heritage Round of 2003, the Fremantle footy team emerged wearing red and white uniform which was similar to the one worn by the members of the 1885 team and made it to the finals. In the year 2006, the Fremantle Club finished the year with a record win in 9 consecutive matches and earned the 3rd position at the end of the season.
The Fremantle Football club has never won a premiership title, although it holds the record of never having played a draw match. In total, the Fremantle team has played 264 matches at both home and away season and has won 107 matches out of them. They have played 4 final matches, out of which they have just won one, against Collingwood. The highest goal kicker of the Fremantle club is Matthew Pavlich who has a record of 240 goals at the end of 2006 season. On the other hand, Tony Modra holds the record for most goals in a season, i.e. 71. Till now, none of the members of the Fremantle club have won Brownlow, Coleman and Leigh Matthew Trophies.
The present coach of the team is Mark Harvey and present captain is Matthew Pavlich. Currently, the Fremantle Football Club owns the 11th position in the world rankings.
