Townsville is a city located on the eastern coast of Australia in the state of Queensland. The city is within the federal division of Herbert and within the state district of Townsville. This picturesque city enjoys a great deal of tourist attraction as it is located very near to the Great Barrier Reef, a natural treasure of Australia. Thuringowa is the twin city of Townsville. Woodstock, Alligator Creek and Magnetic Island are the three suburbs of this city. The government of Australia has planned to merge both Townsville and Thuringowa in 2008 to make a big city of Townsville. Townsville was established in the 1865 and in the initial years it was known as town. In 1903 its status was upgraded to a city. During the Second World War this area was highly affected and had also experienced Japanese infiltration.

The Townsville City council is responsible for the administration and governance of this city. The head of the city is the Mayor and there are also ten councilors who are elected at regular intervals. Tony Mooney is the present mayor of Townsville city. The two other sections in the council are the Civic cabinet and the Deputy Mayor.

The city of Townsville experiences a tropical kind of climate but there is less of rainfall in this area than other tropical regions. The average annual rainfall in this city is around 853 millimeter. As the city falls within the cyclone zones there are thunderstorms almost every year during the cyclone season. It is quiet warm all throughout the year and the temperature rarely drops significantly during winter season.
