Tamworth is a city in the New South Wales region, Australia. It is the regional centre for southern New England and is the seat of Tamworth Regional Council. The city of Tamworth is considered as the “Country Music Capital of Australia” and is the base for Tamworth Country Music Festival. Tamworth is located on the National Highway 15, between the cities of Sydney and Brisbane with major links to Australian cities.

The city of Tamworth was originally inhabited by the Kamilaroi group of tribal people. Then in 1818, European explorer John Oxley passed through this region and discovered the area. Thereafter in 1834, settlement started when the Australian Agricultural Company took large portions of land in the region. Tamworth was named after Sir Roberts Peel Electorate of Tamworth in Staffordshire England. Tamworth was given the status of a town in 1850. The discovery of gold in the nearby area of Hanging Rock brought more settlers to Tamworth. It was the first town in Australia to get electric street lights and other major developments also followed in the city. Tamworth was officially recognised as a city in 1946 and has developed into a highly developed modern city with all latest amenities.

The Tamworth city experiences a moderate type of climate with summer temperatures of 24ºC on an average and winter temperatures of 10ºC in a year. Rainfall occurs all year round with summer storms bringing in heavy showers. Floods are common in the month of January and occasional snowfall is also not uncommon. The climate is generally warm in winters and mild in winters and snowfall is quite rare in the city.

Tamworth city is located in the heart of the country and is well-connected by rail, road and air transport facilities. The city of Tamworth is served by fast Explorer trains to and fro from Sydney. Coaches connect different parts of the Tamworth city with major Australian towns in all directions. Tamworth airport is located very close to the main business centre and it has regular flights from Sydney. Tamworth city has a lively cultural scenario and is best known as the host of Country Music Festival. It is often regarded as one of the 10 most popular and biggest music festivals of the world. The festival is conducted in the month of January and spans for a period of 10 days during which many international artists perform live all throughout the day. Several other cultural festivals are also organised in the city and in nearby regions all year round. Tamworth City Gallery is one of the oldest and biggest galleries of New South Wales and has many priced possessions.
