The city of Tamworth was originally inhabited by the Kamilaroi group of tribal people. Then in 1818, European explorer John Oxley passed through this region and discovered the area. Thereafter in 1834, settlement started when the Australian Agricultural Company took large portions of land in the region. Tamworth was named after Sir Roberts Peel Electorate of Tamworth in Staffordshire England. Tamworth was given the status of a town in 1850. The discovery of gold in the nearby area of Hanging Rock brought more settlers to Tamworth. It was the first town in Australia to get electric street lights and other major developments also followed in the city. Tamworth was officially recognised as a city in 1946 and has developed into a highly developed modern city with all latest amenities.
The Tamworth city experiences a moderate type of climate with summer temperatures of 24ºC on an average and winter temperatures of 10ºC in a year.
