Shepparton is regarded to be originally inhabited by the Yota-Yota tribal people before the Europeans came in. the first Europeans who came to the region were Joseph Hawdon and Charles Bonney who settled by the Goulburn River. Sherbourne Sheppard came and settled along the Tallygaroopna region, on which the city was later developed. The city was initially known as Macguire�s and was later changed to Shepparton in 1855. The city witnessed a major growth in the following years with a major breakthrough in agro-industries. Shepparton became a borough in 1927 and gained the status of a city in 1949.
