Shepparton lies in the heart of the Goulburn Valley and is located 179km north of the city of Melbourne. Shepparton is the fifth largest city of Victoria, Australia and is a major commercial centre of the region. The city of Mooroopna is separated from Shepparton by a river and a wide tract of forest. It is a division of the Greater Shepparton City Council and is the base of a number of local industries, specially the fruit processing industry. Shepparton city is often known as the “Food Capital of Australia”. Shepparton has three nearby towns—Mooroopna, Shepparton East and Kialla.

Shepparton is regarded to be originally inhabited by the Yota-Yota tribal people before the Europeans came in. the first Europeans who came to the region were Joseph Hawdon and Charles Bonney who settled by the Goulburn River. Sherbourne Sheppard came and settled along the Tallygaroopna region, on which the city was later developed. The city was initially known as Macguire’s and was later changed to Shepparton in 1855. The city witnessed a major growth in the following years with a major breakthrough in agro-industries. Shepparton became a borough in 1927 and gained the status of a city in 1949.

Shepparton city enjoys a temperate type of climate which is characterised by extremes of climate, both in winter as well as in summer. During the summer months of January and February temperatures soar up to 30şC and in winter months of June and July it drops down to 2şC in a year. Maximum amount of rainfall occurs in the month of May and October, although it is fairly distributed all round the year.

The Shepparton city is served by the VLine rail network which has rail services to and fro from Melbourne. It also has trains from Bendigo, Griffith and Wangaratta of the New South Wales region. The nearest airports from Shepparton include Avalon Airport, Albury Airport and Melbourne Airport, all of which are well-served by various flights to different destinations. Shepparton is also well-served by many private bus services which travel within the city and some even connect the major New South Wales cities to Shepparton. Shepparton city also has the Goulburn Valley Highway connecting the major parts of the city apart from other important roads.

Shepparton city has a lively cultural community which comprises of an art gallery which has Australian paintings and ceramic works. There is a huge war memorial which is located close to the council offices. The Shepparton Heritage Centre has many items focussing on Shepparton’s history. The Shepparton Festival which is held annually inn the month of March is a celebration of music, dance, theatre, food and wine and works of art.
