Orange is a city in the state of New South Wales in Australia. The city was formed in the mid of the nineteenth century when a gold mine was discovered in this region. It is also known as the ‘Colour City’ of Australia. The city is well known as the city of Banjo Paterson. The name of the town was kept after the Prince of Orange. The region was inhabited by the Wiradjuri aboriginal tribes who were marginalized with the arrival of the Europeans. The town was established by Major Mitchell in the year 1846. The discovery of gold in a place called Ophir near the city has led to the population and economic boom. It was the first region where gold was discovered in Australia and led to the commencement of the famous gold rush. The city was connected to Sydney by rail in the second half of the 19th century which led to further growth. Though the town was established in 1846 it got a status of a city only after 100 years.

As the city of Orange is located on a higher altitude thus the climate is moderate. The summers are warm and comfortable and the winters are cold. The city also experiences snowfall sometimes. The average annual rainfall in the city is around 878 millimeter.

The Orange city is located just three and a half hours away from Sydney and just three hours from Canberra. The roads which connect this city with various parts of the state are Mitchell Highway and Newell Highway. There are two railway stations in which have regular trains from Sydney and Dubbo. The regional airport of the city is also known as the Orange Airport.

Orange over the years has grown as a major tourist spot. The breathtaking beauty of the city and the gorgeous parks are its main attractions. The main activities to be indulged in while in the city are wine tasting, having a lazed walk in one of the many parks or the Orange Botanic gardens or playing golf. Mount Canobolas State Recreation Area, Banjo Paterson Memorial, Orange Regional gallery and Library and Cook Park are the few attractions in the city. Orange is an excellent place for shopping which has a number of antique shops, boutiques and fashion houses. BigW and Myer are the two major shopping malls in the region.

Wine and regional fruits are present in most of local recipes served in the local restaurants. Both white and red wine is a specialty of this region. The city arranges a food festival each autumn called the FOOD week where the wide range of food of this region is displayed and sold.
