The Murray Bridge area was initially inhabited by the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal tribes. The first European to explore Murray Bridge region was Captain Charles Sturt who travelled in a whale boat and reached the junction with Murray River in the year 1830. He continued further with his journey and reached Lake Alexandria on 9 February 1830. it was then he realised that Murray River could be used for transportation purposes, however, it was not until the completion of a road bridge over Murray River in 1879 that the Murray Bridge city developed. The city was laid down in1883 and was initially known as Mobilong, then was called Edwards Crossing and in 1924 came to be known as Murray Bridge after the new rail bridge was constructed across the Murray River.
