Albury is a city of New South Wales, Australia and is situated on the Hume Highway and lies on the northern side of the Murray River. Albury is the second most significant city of Riverina and the second largest city of New South Wales. Albury is separated from its sister city of Wodonga, by the Murray River. The city of Albury is located very close to Melbourne. Albury was inhabited by Aboriginal Australians but only a few specimen remains of their existence. The European exploration started in Albury when explorers Hume and Howell arrived on the Murray River on 16 November 1824. Thereafter, William Wyse and Charles Ebden followed their footsteps and arrived in Albury. In 1851, when Victoria separated from New South Wales, Albury became a frontier town and grew up as a customs post between the two New South Wales colonies. In the past few decades, Albury along with Wodonga has developed itself as a popular stop-over destination for tourists traveling to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. Albury experiences a warm and temperate climate during summers and very cool to mild winters. During summers, the temperature range between 30�C to 35�C, however, occasional seasonal variations are not uncommon. During winters the temperatures drop down to 14�C or lower. Frosts are quite common during winter season and about 20 days in a year experience temperatures below freezing point. Most of the rainfall occurs during the winter months; however, precipitation occurs throughout the year. There is not much variation in the amount of rainfall in Albury. Albury has an excellent transportation network because it is situated as a transit point. The Hume Freeway bypasses Albury and there are many other minor highways which connect different parts of the city. The Albury railway station is located on the Sydney-Melbourne railway line and has broad-gauge. However, now plans are being made to transform this broad-gauge line into standard gauge. Albury Airport is one of the busiest regional airports in New South Wales. The airport has scheduled flights to Melbourne and Sydney provided by QantasLink and Regional Express airways. Public transport facilities are offered by Mylon Motorways which operate a large number of buses to different parts of Albury and to Wodonga. The cultural scenario of Albury is dominated by the Murray River Performing Group which is the most notable theatre group. Many notable actors and dramatists have performed with this group. Albury also has a flourishing rock band and there are many supporters of the rock culture. Albury has a wide variety of tourist destinations which are spread all throughout the region like the historic goldfields of Beechworth and Yackandanah, Paddle steamer Cumberoona, forests of the Great Diving Range, Rutherglen Wineries, Lake Hume and Murray River which provide ample scope for boating and fishing. Albury itself is not a popular tourist destination but rather acts as a stop-over for people visiting the nearby attractions. Albury has many shopping areas which offer a wide variety of objects at reasonable prices. The city boasts of excellent shopping centers which are cheaper than that of Sydney and Melbourne. Albury also has many restaurants like the Globe Hotel, Green Zebra and Sourcedining which offer exquisite Mexican, Thai, Italian, Chinese and Continental dishes.
